Axel's take: 7.6/10

A handy central base, but compact rooms and thin walls limit the appeal. a simple 3-star city-centre hotel opposite Piccadilly Gardens, scored for what it is.

Manchester Portland by Sunday is a simple 3-star city-centre hotel whose biggest selling point is convenience. Opposite Piccadilly Gardens and a short walk from Piccadilly station, it makes shopping, restaurants and nights out easy without a car. We'd consider it good value for a short city break: recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and cleanliness, while the downstairs bar is handy after a day out.

The compromise is room quality rather than location. Rooms can be compact, and several recent Tripadvisor guests describe thin walls and corridor noise. Feedback on decor and upkeep varies, with some housekeeping lapses alongside plenty of clean-room reports. Breakfast costs extra unless included, and there's no hotel parking. We'd skip it if quiet sleep or generous room space matters most.

• Best for: short city breaks on a budget; rail travelers; shopping and nightlife trips

• Watch out for: thin walls and corridor noise; compact rooms and variable upkeep; no on-site parking

• Location: Opposite Piccadilly Gardens, with easy access to trams, shopping and Piccadilly station.

• Rooms: Simple, often compact rooms; comfortable beds earn praise, but soundproofing is a recurring weakness.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive overall, though recent Tripadvisor reviews include some housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming reception staff are a frequent positive; problem handling is less consistent.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, restaurant, bar and paid breakfast; straightforward city-hotel facilities.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a city levy; breakfast may be extra, and parking must be arranged off-site.
