Axel's take: 8.5/10

Warehouse character and welcoming staff make this a strong Manchester city-break base. a historic riverside 4-star in a converted Manchester warehouse, scored for what it is.

This historic riverside 4-star offers more character than a standard chain hotel, with exposed brick, timber beams and a handy location beside Spinningfields and Aviva Studios. It's a strong pick for a Manchester weekend: Expedia and Booking.com ratings are especially positive on cleanliness and staff, while recent guests repeatedly praise comfortable rooms and breakfast. The riverside terrace adds somewhere pleasant to unwind.

The warehouse layout brings compromises: some rooms feel dark, beams can be low, and sound travels between rooms. Recent reviews also mention occasional breakfast or bar-service delays, although friendly staff remain a clear strength. Marriott now directs drivers to paid off-site parking, and there's no on-site pool or gym. We'd choose it for location and atmosphere, but skip it if leisure facilities or reliably quiet, uniformly modern rooms are priorities.

• Best for: Aviva Studios concertgoers; couples on city breaks; business and conference travelers

• Watch out for: Dark rooms, low beams and some neighbor noise; Paid off-site parking; No on-site pool or gym

• Location: By the River Irwell, beside Aviva Studios and convenient for Spinningfields restaurants.

• Rooms: Comfortable rooms with warehouse character; lighting, ceiling height and sound insulation vary.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall ratings across Booking.com and Expedia outweigh scattered housekeeping complaints.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff draw consistent praise; occasional check-in and dining delays occur.

• Amenities: Restaurant, bar, riverside terrace and meeting spaces; fitness facilities are off-site.

• Fees and surprises: Marriott lists paid off-site parking; check breakfast inclusion and direct-booking Wi-Fi conditions.
