Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong city-break base with welcoming staff, though some rooms need freshening up. a characterful 4-star warehouse hotel near Piccadilly station, scored for what it is.

Malmaison Manchester is a characterful 4-star in a converted Victorian warehouse, a short walk from Piccadilly station. It's a strong pick for a city break or work trip: Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, comfortable beds and the convenient location. Booking.com's ratings also back up the comfort and cleanliness. The bar and brasserie give it more personality than a straightforward business hotel.

The catch is uneven room condition. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews mention tired carpets and dated details, so don't expect uniformly fresh interiors. Some guests also report slow breakfast or bar service at busy times, although staff feedback is overwhelmingly positive. The spa is treatments-only, with no pool, sauna or steam room. We'd skip it if pristine contemporary rooms or a full spa are priorities.

• Best for: city-break couples; business travelers arriving by train; weekends centered on restaurants and nightlife

• Watch out for: tired finishes in some rooms; occasional waits at breakfast and the bar; no pool, sauna or steam room

• Location: A short walk from Piccadilly station, with central shops, restaurants and Canal Street nearby.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and characterful decor; some recent guests flag dated details and worn carpets.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall guest ratings outweigh scattered housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a consistent strength; busy food-and-drink periods can be slower.

• Amenities: Brasserie, bar, gym and pre-bookable spa treatments; no wet-spa facilities.

• Fees and surprises: Cashless; Expedia lists a city visitor charge, with additional charges for pets and some extras.
