Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong central Manchester pick for comfortable rooms, friendly staff and easy train access. a stylish, upscale city hotel beside Manchester Victoria station, scored for what it is.

Hotel Indigo is a stylish, upscale city hotel beside Victoria station, combining a listed Victorian building with contemporary rooms. It's a strong pick for a Manchester weekend or an AO Arena concert, with shopping and the Northern Quarter close by. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the comfortable beds, spacious showers, cleanliness and welcoming staff. Recent reviews also make breakfast a persuasive reason to eat in rather than head straight out.

The main compromise is noise: some guests hear traffic or neighbouring rooms, although many report quiet stays. Ask for a quiet room if sleep is your priority. Parking is paid and off-site, and the hotel confirms there's no pool. We'd choose it for a comfortable, characterful city base; we'd skip it for a secluded break or extensive leisure facilities.

• Best for: AO Arena concertgoers; city breaks arriving by train; couples exploring central Manchester

• Watch out for: Noise varies by room; Paid off-site parking; Incidental card pre-authorisation

• Location: Beside Victoria station, with AO Arena, shopping and Northern Quarter dining within easy walking distance.

• Rooms: Stylish rooms earn strong praise for comfortable beds and generous showers; soundproofing receives mixed feedback.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across the major review sites, despite occasional housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are among the most consistently praised features.

• Amenities: Mamucium restaurant and cocktail bar, Todd St Café, fitness centre and free Wi-Fi; no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra off-site; management confirms an incidental card hold, and breakfast inclusion depends on the booking.
