Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong central base where helpful staff and comfortable rooms outweigh some ageing details. a comfortable 4-star chain hotel on the edge of Manchester’s Northern Quarter, scored for what it is.

This 4-star Crowne Plaza is a strong pick for Manchester city breaks: close to the Northern Quarter, Arndale shopping and Victoria station, with Shudehill trams nearby. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, clean rooms, comfortable beds and a generous breakfast. It delivers the practical comforts expected at this level, without being somewhere you’d choose primarily for its design.

The main compromise is condition rather than comfort. Recent Trip.com guests mention dated corridors and fittings, while Tripadvisor reviews flag occasional TV and telephone faults. These are qualifications to a broadly positive picture, not evidence of widespread neglect. Parking is paid and off-site, and there’s no pool. We’d choose it for shopping, concerts and a convenient weekend base; skip it if fresh interiors or extensive leisure facilities matter most.

• Best for: AO Arena concertgoers; shopping and Northern Quarter weekends; business travelers wanting a central base

• Watch out for: some dated interiors and occasional maintenance faults; paid off-site parking; no swimming pool

• Location: Walkable for Victoria station, the Arndale and Northern Quarter; Shudehill trams are nearby.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and generally good space, but some fittings and technology show their age.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback and major booking-site ratings.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception and restaurant staff are among the most consistently praised features.

• Amenities: Glasshouse restaurant and bar, a gym, free Wi-Fi and Club Lounge access with eligible bookings; no pool.

• Fees and surprises: No on-site car park; discounted paid parking nearby. Check whether breakfast and lounge access are included.
