Axel's take: 7.3/10

A practical Quays base with welcoming staff, but rooms lag behind its four-star billing. an older 4-star waterfront hotel in Salford Quays, scored for what it is.

The Copthorne is an older 4-star waterfront hotel whose strongest assets are practical: free resident parking, nearby Exchange Quay trams and a walkable route to Old Trafford. We'd consider it for football or a short Quays visit rather than a special occasion. Expedia and Trip.com guests regularly praise the welcoming staff, spacious rooms and breakfast; quayside rooms add a pleasant outlook.

The compromise is condition. Recent reviews repeatedly describe dated furniture and bathrooms, and summer guests report stuffy rooms without air conditioning. Management confirmed a refurbishment programme in July 2026, but its completion is unverified: ask which rooms have been updated and whether work will affect your stay. Cleanliness is generally well rated, though housekeeping and maintenance are not entirely consistent. We'd skip it if modern four-star polish or dependable cooling matters most.

• Best for: Old Trafford matchgoers; drivers exploring Manchester by tram; short Salford Quays stays

• Watch out for: dated rooms and bathrooms; no air conditioning reported by summer guests; refurbishment completion unconfirmed

• Location: Waterfront setting near Exchange Quay trams; Old Trafford is about a 15-minute walk, but central Manchester requires transport.

• Rooms: Spacious but frequently described as dated; summer guests report stuffiness without air conditioning.

• Cleanliness: Generally positively rated, with some recent housekeeping lapses rather than a consistently poor picture.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength across Expedia, Tripadvisor and Trip.com.

• Amenities: Restaurant, bar and Wi-Fi; the official website explicitly says there is no on-site gym or swimming pool.

• Fees and surprises: Resident parking is advertised as free; register at reception. Refurbishment was confirmed in July 2026, with completion unverified.
