Axel's take: 7.1/10

A handy budget base, but uneven rooms and refurbishment require realistic expectations. A budget hotel-and-hostel hybrid in Manchester city centre, scored for what it is.

a&o Manchester City Centre is a budget hotel-and-hostel hybrid taking over the adjoining former Novotel and ibis. We'd consider it for a short, location-first stay: Chinatown, restaurants and St Peter's Square are close by, and recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise the convenience, comfortable beds and helpful staff. The larger booking-site ratings remain broadly positive, although they include reviews from before the change of operator.

The trade-off is inconsistency. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests describe stained carpets, missing kettles and drawn-out QR-code check-in, alongside reports of clean, comfortable rooms. Confirm your room type and building rather than assuming every photograph represents what you'll receive. a&o's refurbishment programme is scheduled to finish in the first quarter of 2027 while the property stays open; ask about work affecting your dates. We'd skip it for a polished hotel experience or a special occasion.

• Best for: Budget-conscious city breakers; Short stays near Chinatown; Travelers prioritizing walkability

• Watch out for: Refurbishment scheduled through early 2027; Variable room condition across buildings; QR-code check-in and missing in-room kettles

• Location: Central for Chinatown, St Peter's Square and restaurants; roughly 15 minutes' walk from Piccadilly.

• Rooms: Basic private and family rooms; condition varies, with recurring reports of stained carpets and absent kettles.

• Cleanliness: Broadly positive booking-site scores, but recent complaints show housekeeping and carpet condition are not consistent.

• Service: Many guests praise helpful staff; check-in queues and digital registration repeatedly frustrate others.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, a bar, paid buffet breakfast and 24-hour reception; do not assume the catalog's spa or fitness facilities remain available.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a city levy and extra charges for breakfast and pets; nearby parking is paid, and refurbishment is scheduled through Q1 2027.
