Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong Salamanca base, with helpful staff and rooms worth choosing carefully. A comfortable 4-star city hotel in Madrid’s Salamanca shopping district, scored for what it is.

Catalonia Goya is a comfortable 4-star in a handsome historic building, best suited to travelers who want Salamanca’s shops and restaurants with Velázquez metro almost at the door. It’s a strong pick for a city break: Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, comfortable beds, helpful staff and the varied breakfast. The hotel specifically identifies its Premium rooms as recently renovated, making those the clearest choice for a contemporary stay.

Choose carefully rather than assuming every room matches the newest photos: standard doubles are compact and retain a classic design. Several summer 2026 guests also report air-conditioning struggling in Madrid’s heat, although others found it effective. The small seasonal pool is a cooling-off bonus, not a reason to book a swimming holiday. We’d skip it if spacious entry-level rooms or dependable midsummer cooling are priorities.

• Best for: Couples on shopping-focused city breaks; Business travelers using the metro; Travelers prioritizing service and cleanliness

• Watch out for: Compact, classically styled standard rooms; Repeated summer air-conditioning complaints; Small pool, closed October 31–March 31

• Location: Salamanca shops and restaurants nearby, with Velázquez metro almost outside.

• Rooms: Standard doubles are 18 m²; renovated Premium categories offer a more contemporary finish.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and Trip.com feedback.

• Service: Helpful reception and attentive breakfast staff receive repeated praise.

• Amenities: Small seasonal pool, gym, gastrobar, room service and a well-liked buffet breakfast.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; parking is paid and off-site; pets require approval, a supplement and deposit.
