Axel's take: 9.1/10

Generous apartments and thoughtful service, with nightlife noise the main compromise. An upscale 4-star apartment hotel on the Chiado–Bairro Alto edge, scored for what it is.

Almaria Ex Libris is an upscale apartment hotel rather than a conventional full-service four-star, and it's a strong pick for travelers wanting room to spread out in central Lisbon. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the spacious apartments, excellent housekeeping and genuinely helpful staff. Proper kitchens, in-apartment laundry and fresh bread delivered each morning make it particularly appealing for families and longer stays. The literary-themed interiors add character without sacrificing practicality.

The main compromise is sound: recent guests mention weekend nightlife outside and, in some apartments, footsteps from upstairs, although others report quiet nights. A few also flag limited hot water when using two showers together. Reception has limited hours, so arrange arrival instructions ahead. We'd choose it for apartment comfort and attentive service, but light sleepers and travelers expecting round-the-clock hotel facilities should look elsewhere.

• Best for: Families wanting separate bedrooms; Longer stays with self-catering; Sightseeing and restaurant-focused trips

• Watch out for: Nightlife noise and occasional upstairs footsteps; Limited reception hours; Some reports of hot-water limits with simultaneous showers

• Location: Central Chiado setting beside Bairro Alto's restaurants and bars; expect hills and lively evenings.

• Rooms: Spacious, individually decorated apartments with kitchens and laundry; sound isolation varies.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor, with daily housekeeping.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff draw repeated praise; reception is not staffed around the clock.

• Amenities: Apartment kitchens, washer-dryers, Wi-Fi and breakfast provisions with morning bread delivery.

• Fees and surprises: City tax is payable at the property; no on-site parking; arrange access instructions before arrival.
