Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong central base with spacious rooms, but not full-service luxury. a contemporary five-star boutique hotel on Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade, scored for what it is.

138 Liberdade is a contemporary five-star boutique hotel whose strongest luxury is its location: shops, restaurants and the metro are close, with Rossio an easy walk away. We’d pick it for a comfortable city break rather than a resort-style stay. Booking.com and recent Expedia guests consistently praise spacious, clean rooms, welcoming staff and a generous breakfast. The courtyard and complimentary lobby refreshments add appeal.

The five-star label needs some perspective. There’s no pool or spa, and guests describe a limited gym. Some rooms’ dark finishes divide opinion, while noise and occasional maintenance or service lapses appear among otherwise strongly positive reports. Light sleepers should request a quiet room rather than assume every outlook is peaceful. We’d skip it if extensive wellness facilities and consistently polished luxury service matter more than location.

• Best for: couples on a Lisbon city break; shoppers and first-time visitors; travelers wanting spacious central rooms

• Watch out for: no pool or spa; limited gym; noise varies by room; dark room and bathroom finishes

• Location: Prime shopping avenue, close to the metro and walkable to Rossio.

• Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable; dark styling and soundproofing draw some criticism.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor reviews.

• Service: Usually warm and helpful, with occasional complaints about follow-through and maintenance.

• Amenities: Restaurant, courtyard, bar and lobby refreshments; modest gym, no pool or spa.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion depends on the booking; complimentary parking requires availability and should be requested.
