Axel's take: 7.8/10

A personable Ikoyi base, but renovations compromise the five-star experience. an independent five-star boutique hotel in Ikoyi, scored for what it is.

The Wheatbaker is an independent five-star boutique hotel in Ikoyi, with an African-art identity and a more intimate feel than a large business hotel. We'd shortlist it for work trips: Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, comfortable rooms and the location. Cleanliness feedback is predominantly positive, and breakfast earns plenty of praise, though dining is not uniformly convincing.

The main reservation is substantial: renovations have continued into 2026, and Booking.com's current notice says the swimming pool and gym remain unavailable. The refreshed spa has reopened, according to the hotel and Booking.com. Recent room-maintenance complaints also temper the luxury promise. We'd skip it for a pool-led holiday or a fully polished five-star stay; otherwise, confirm the work schedule and facilities before committing.

• Best for: business travelers visiting Ikoyi; travelers who prefer intimate hotels; African-art enthusiasts

• Watch out for: pool and gym closed for renovation; ongoing refurbishment; some rooms need maintenance

• Location: Ikoyi location consistently scores well; the official address is 4 Onitolo Road.

• Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable, but recent guests flag scuffed finishes and bathroom maintenance.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback, particularly on Expedia, despite occasional contrary reports.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a recurring strength; front-desk problem handling is less consistent.

• Amenities: Restaurant, coffee bar and reopened spa; Booking.com currently confirms pool and gym closures.

• Fees and surprises: Airport transfers and early or late room access can cost extra; confirm renovation disruption before booking.
