Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong mainland base, with welcoming staff and breakfast worth making time for. A small 4-star business hotel in Maryland, Ikeja, scored for what it is.

Leola is a small 4-star business hotel in Maryland, Ikeja, and a strong pick for a mainland stay. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, clean rooms and generous breakfasts. Spacious accommodation, an outdoor pool and a gym give it enough substance beyond the service. We'd choose it for business trips or visits centered on Ikeja rather than a resort-style holiday.

The main reservation is consistency in the rooms: some guests report hard mattresses, maintenance niggles or temporary water interruptions, although these do not dominate the recent feedback. Check the room's essentials on arrival, and confirm whether breakfast is included; airport transfers also cost extra. We'd skip it if your plans mostly revolve around Lagos's islands, or if you expect uniformly polished luxury rather than a comfortable, personable business hotel.

• Best for: Business travelers visiting Ikeja; Mainland family visits; Travelers who value attentive service

• Watch out for: Some reports of hard mattresses; Occasional maintenance and water-supply issues; Breakfast and airport transfers may cost extra

• Location: Maryland Estate location suits Ikeja and mainland plans; Maryland Mall is nearby.

• Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable, with occasional complaints about firm beds and maintenance.

• Cleanliness: Recent feedback is strongly positive overall, despite isolated sharply negative experiences.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across recent reviews.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, gym, restaurant, bar, Wi-Fi and free on-site parking are corroborated.

• Fees and surprises: Confirm breakfast inclusion and transfer charges; the official website could not be accessed to verify policies directly.
