#7 of 9 hotels in Karasuma & Shijo by Axel's take. Karasuma & Shijo is #3 of 7 places to stay in Kyoto. The best hotels in Karasuma & Shijo, ranked · Where to stay in Kyoto

Axel's take: 8.5/10

A clean, well-connected Kyoto base that puts practicality before atmosphere. a practical 3-star business hotel near Karasuma Oike subway, scored for what it is.

Hearton Hotel Kyoto is a straightforward 3-star business hotel, and a strong pick for sightseeing without paying for luxury extras. Its location near Karasuma Oike gives you useful subway connections and a quieter base than the main shopping streets. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, helpful staff and value. Coin-operated laundry, shared microwaves and two restaurants make longer stays easier.

Choose the room category carefully: the hotel lists doubles at 15–16 square meters, versus 23 for standard twins; an economy twin includes a sofa bed. Breakfast feedback ranges from enthusiastic to merely adequate. We'd skip it for traditional Kyoto atmosphere or spacious lounging. Also check winter dates: water-tank replacement runs November 30–December 31, 2026, with no water anywhere in the hotel on December 21, 11:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Best for: value-minded sightseeing couples; solo travelers using the subway; longer stays needing laundry
Watch out for: compact doubles and economy twins; economy twins include a sofa bed; winter 2026 works and December 21 water outage
Location: Near Karasuma Oike subway, with convenience stores nearby and central sights within walking reach.
Rooms: Functional rooms with individual air conditioning; standard twins offer considerably more space than doubles.
Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews, supported by strong booking-site cleanliness ratings.
Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise the friendly, accommodating front desk; reception is staffed around the clock.
Amenities: Two restaurants, free Wi-Fi, coin laundry and shared microwaves; no public bath or room service.
Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; parking is paid, limited and height-restricted; December 21's water outage also cancels restaurant lunch.
