Hotels in Kansas CityA family-run budget motel just north of downtown Kansas City
6.2/10
Convenient for a cheap overnight, but persistent smoke smells limit its appeal.
American Inn is a family-run budget motel, not the comfortable mid-range hotel its listed stars might suggest. We'd consider it for a basic overnight with a car: downtown is a short drive away, parking is free, and rooms have refrigerators and microwaves. Recent Expedia guests often praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and clean rooms; Tripadvisor feedback also includes reasonable one-night stays. Guest ratings overall remain mixed rather than reassuring.
The biggest drawback is cigarette odor, repeatedly reported in hallways and even non-smoking rooms. The hotel explicitly offers smoking rooms, so a non-smoking booking does not guarantee smoke-free surroundings. Dated common areas, noise and uneven housekeeping are further trade-offs, despite some reports of refreshed rooms. We'd skip it if you're smoke-sensitive, a light sleeper, or looking for a dependable family holiday base.

Best for: budget travelers with a car; short North Kansas City visits
Watch out for: smoke odors in non-smoking areas; uneven housekeeping and dated interiors; noise between rooms
Location: Handy interstate access north of downtown; some restaurants are within walking distance.
Rooms: Spacious rooms with microwaves and refrigerators; condition varies, and soundproofing draws complaints.
Cleanliness: Many recent guests report clean rooms, but dirty bathrooms, linens and musty odors also recur.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent bright spot across guest feedback.
Amenities: Free parking, Wi-Fi, guest laundry and lobby coffee; outdoor pool is seasonal, and breakfast is not provided.
Fees and surprises: Smoking rooms are available; no elevators or pets, and Expedia lists the pool season as May–August.
