#2 of 2 hotels in Braamfontein by Axel's take. Braamfontein is #4 of 10 places to stay in Johannesburg. The best hotels in Braamfontein, ranked · Where to stay in Johannesburg

Axel's take: 7.2/10

Good budget comfort and friendly service, but nightlife can overwhelm a night's sleep. A simple 3-star city hotel with a lively bar in Braamfontein, scored for what it is.

Bannister is a simple 3-star hotel in Braamfontein, better suited to joining the neighborhood's nightlife than escaping it. We'd consider it for a budget-conscious city break or a visit to nearby Wits. Booking.com scores staff more strongly than the hotel overall, and recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful service, clean rooms and the convenient restaurant downstairs. It's a practical base rather than somewhere to expect luxury.

The main compromise is sleep: several guests describe loud music and bass from the bar, sometimes continuing into the early hours. Double glazing does not reliably solve that. Room sizes and equipment also differ between listings, so confirm your exact category, parking arrangements and breakfast inclusion before booking. We'd skip it for a restorative stopover, early starts or a quiet family stay.

Best for: Budget-conscious city explorers; Nightlife-minded travelers; Visitors to Wits University
Watch out for: Late-night bar music and bass; Conflicting room-size and equipment descriptions; Confirm parking arrangements before arrival
Location: Central Braamfontein base near Wits, cafés and cultural venues; some guests express reservations about the surrounding streets.
Rooms: Recent guests often find rooms comfortable, but official and booking-site descriptions disagree on sizes and equipment.
Cleanliness: Recent Expedia feedback is largely positive, supported by Booking.com's solid cleanliness rating.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the clearest recurring strength across sources.
Amenities: Restaurant, lively bar, free Wi-Fi and airport transfers; transfers carry an extra charge.
Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion and parking location; do not assume every room has a kettle or coffee station.
