Axel's take: 7.9/10

A well-connected Wan Chai base, with uneven room condition and a suspended pool. a practical 4-star city hotel in lively Wan Chai, scored for what it is.

Wharney is a practical 4-star city hotel, strongest as a base for exploring rather than somewhere to spend the day. Wan Chai MTR is about three minutes away, with restaurants, trams and nightlife close by. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, helpful staff and convenience. We'd pick it for a sightseeing or business trip where location and value matter more than luxury.

Room condition is less consistent: recent guests mention worn furniture and occasional musty smells alongside many comfortable stays. The gym is in the annex, and the hotel's website currently says the swimming pool is suspended for maintenance, with reopening unannounced. We'd skip it if swimming or uniformly fresh interiors are priorities.

• Best for: transit-focused sightseers; Wan Chai business travelers; travelers who enjoy nearby nightlife

• Watch out for: pool suspended for maintenance; uneven room condition; occasional musty-room reports

• Location: Excellent transport access, plentiful dining and a walkable route to the convention centre.

• Rooms: Most published room categories are 22–24 square metres; comfort earns praise, but some furnishings show wear.

• Cleanliness: Strong recent feedback overall, with occasional reports of musty smells rather than a broad cleanliness problem.

• Service: Recent reviews commonly praise friendly staff, housekeeping and efficient luggage storage.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, restaurants, massage services and an annex gym; the official site currently lists the pool as suspended.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast costs extra unless included in your booking; do not rely on booking-site pool listings.
