Axel's take: 9.1/10

Distinctive Central luxury with generous rooms and service that earns its reputation. a five-star design hotel in a converted government building beside Hong Kong Park, scored for what it is.

The Murray is a five-star design hotel in a converted government building beside Hong Kong Park, and we'd put it high on the shortlist for Central. Its appeal goes beyond architecture: recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise spacious rooms, meticulous housekeeping and genuinely attentive staff. Breakfast is another consistent strength, while Popinjays adds a rooftop setting for drinks. It's a strong pick for travelers who want contemporary luxury with some breathing room.

The main compromises concern getting around and leisure facilities. Central MTR is roughly a ten-minute walk rather than downstairs; the complimentary shuttle helps. Several guests find the indoor pool and gym modest for this level of hotel, so we'd skip it for a pool-focused stay. Check your room category carefully: entry-level Superior rooms have showers rather than tubs, and lounge access isn't standard.

• Best for: design-minded luxury travelers; business travelers based in Central; couples prioritizing rooms and service

• Watch out for: modest indoor pool and gym; roughly ten-minute walk to Central MTR; bathtubs and lounge access depend on room category

• Location: Beside Hong Kong Park and the Peak Tram; Central MTR is around ten minutes away on foot.

• Rooms: Generously sized contemporary rooms; Superior starts at 38 square meters with a shower, not a bathtub.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across sites, with repeated praise for thorough housekeeping and well-maintained rooms.

• Service: Recent guests consistently praise welcoming front-desk staff, helpful concierge teams and thoughtful personal touches.

• Amenities: Rooftop dining, spa, indoor lap pool, gym and complimentary shuttle; fitness facilities are relatively modest.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast can cost extra depending on the booking; valet parking and rollaway beds carry charges.
