Axel's take: 9.0/10

Distinctive Hong Kong design backed by excellent service and consistently clean rooms. a design-led 4-star boutique hotel in Wan Chai, scored for what it is.

The Fleming is a design-led 4-star boutique in Wan Chai, and a strong pick if you prefer character to big-hotel facilities. Its Star Ferry-inspired interiors have substance behind the styling: recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. With the MTR, neighborhood restaurants and convention centre within walking distance, it works equally well for exploring Hong Kong or a business trip.

The compromises are mostly about scale. Entry-level Small rooms can feel tight, and several guests find breakfast limited, even when they enjoy the food. There is no pool or on-site gym; fitness access is off-site. We'd choose a larger room for two people with substantial luggage, and skip it if extensive leisure facilities matter more than design, service and location.

• Best for: design-minded couples; solo city explorers; convention-centre visitors

• Watch out for: compact entry-level Small rooms; limited breakfast selection; no pool or on-site gym

• Location: Walkable Wan Chai base, close to MTR stations, local dining and the convention centre.

• Rooms: Distinctive nautical styling and well-reviewed beds; choose above Small category for more luggage space.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong across recent guest feedback, with high cleanliness ratings on major booking sites.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are one of the most consistent strengths across review sites.

• Amenities: Osteria Marzia restaurant, room service and free Wi-Fi; gym access is off-site, with no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists an incidental deposit; breakfast costs extra unless included, and minibar items are chargeable.
