Axel's take: 8.2/10

A practical Hong Kong Island base with theatrical decor and compact rooms. a large, ornate 4-star near Fortress Hill MTR, scored for what it is.

Hotel Alexandra is a large, ornate 4-star in North Point, and we'd pick it for convenient transport rather than the gilded lobby alone. The covered footbridge toward Fortress Hill MTR makes exploring straightforward, with local restaurants close by. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff and clean, well-maintained rooms; Booking.com guests broadly agree. It's a strong base for travelers spending most of their time out in the city.

The main compromise is space: entry-level Diamond rooms are 21 square metres, and the bedrooms are simpler than the public areas suggest. Some guests also report sound carrying between rooms. The outdoor pool closes December through April, so don't book a winter stay around swimming. We'd skip it if spacious rooms or dependable silence matter more than transport access.

• Best for: couples exploring by public transport; Hong Kong Island business travelers; travelers prioritizing location over room size

• Watch out for: compact entry-level rooms; some reports of room-to-room noise; pool closed December through April

• Location: Near Fortress Hill MTR via a covered footbridge, with local dining nearby.

• Rooms: Diamond rooms measure 21 square metres; choose the room category carefully for space and views.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength: Expedia and Booking.com guests give cleanliness consistently positive marks.

• Service: Recent reviews repeatedly praise friendly, efficient and accommodating staff.

• Amenities: Café A, a fitness centre and a seasonal outdoor pool; the hotel lists pool operation May through November.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a nightly security deposit; breakfast and valet parking cost extra unless included in your booking.
