Axel's take: 8.3/10

A characterful downtown choice, strongest on spacious rooms and welcoming staff. an upscale boutique hotel in a historic downtown building, scored for what it is.

The Goodwin is an upscale boutique hotel in a historic downtown Hartford building, rather than a basic three-star. We'd pick it for distinctive rooms and a convenient base for work, theater or an arena event. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spacious accommodations, comfortable beds and welcoming staff, particularly the valet team. Cleanliness feedback is predominantly positive, and Bar Max gives it more personality than a conventional business hotel.

The compromises are practical: breakfast draws recurring criticism for being basic, valet parking costs extra, and room layouts and daylight vary considerably. Some rooms face an interior shaft, so request an outward-facing room if natural light matters, without assuming it's guaranteed. We'd skip it if a substantial breakfast, predictable room configuration or full-service luxury matters more than character and location.

• Best for: downtown business travelers; couples who prefer boutique character; theater and arena visitors

• Watch out for: basic breakfast; interior-facing rooms with limited daylight; paid valet parking

• Location: Central downtown setting, convenient for restaurants, the arena and Union Station.

• Rooms: Spacious and individually configured; check window exposure and bathroom setup before booking.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised across recent reviews, with occasional exceptions rather than a consistent problem.

• Service: Warm front-desk and valet service is a recurring strength, though check-in experiences vary.

• Amenities: Bar Max, a 24-hour fitness center, free Wi-Fi and a lobby market; breakfast is a weak point.

• Fees and surprises: Paid valet, an incidental authorization and a nonrefundable dog fee; confirm pet restrictions directly.
