#1 of 6 hotels in Zona 1 (Centro Histórico) by Axel's take. Zona 1 (Centro Histórico) is #2 of 5 places to stay in Guatemala City. The best hotels in Zona 1 (Centro Histórico), ranked · Where to stay in Guatemala City

Axel's take: 7.7/10

A practical historic-center base, provided you choose your room carefully. a traditional 3-star hotel in Guatemala City's historic center, scored for what it is.

Hotel Royal Palace is a traditional 3-star in Zona 1, best chosen for exploring the historic center rather than modern comforts. Its Sexta Avenida location puts shops, restaurants and major landmarks within walking distance. Booking.com and Expedia guests generally rate cleanliness well, and several 2026 reviews praise spacious rooms and helpful staff. We'd consider it a good downtown base, though not a standout for value.

The main compromise is street noise, reported across several sites, including recent reviews. Room choice also matters: the official website distinguishes fan-cooled standard rooms from air-conditioned superior categories. Some guests describe tired furnishings or slow hot water, while service feedback is less consistent than the cleanliness scores. Light sleepers and travelers expecting contemporary rooms should look elsewhere; otherwise, confirm air-conditioning and request the quietest available room.

Best for: historic-center sightseeing; travelers who enjoy traditional hotels; short downtown stays
Watch out for: street noise in exposed rooms; standard rooms may have fans rather than air-conditioning; uneven room condition and service
Location: On Sexta Avenida in Zona 1, convenient for walking to historic-center sights and shops.
Rooms: Often described as spacious; superior categories advertise air-conditioning, while standard options list fans.
Cleanliness: A relative strength, with strong cleanliness scores on Booking.com and Expedia.
Service: Many guests praise helpful staff, but recent reviews also describe rigid policies and unhelpful responses.
Amenities: Los Helechos restaurant, Salamandra bar, room service, Wi-Fi and meeting facilities; Expedia lists free parking.
Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; breakfast is not necessarily included, so check the booked plan.
