Axel's take: 5.8/10

A convenient historic-center base, but tired rooms make it a compromise. an aging budget 3-star in Guatemala City's historic center, scored for what it is.

Hotel Maya Excelsior is an aging budget 3-star whose strongest asset is its historic-center location, not dependable comfort. We'd consider it for a short sightseeing stay if convenience matters more than polish. Tripadvisor's recent reviewer praises the walkable setting while noting the faded presentation; several 2026 Expedia guests also praise the restaurant and helpful staff. The hotel's own website confirms a restaurant, pool and event spaces.

The drawback is more than old-fashioned decor: guest reports repeatedly flag worn facilities, with uneven cleanliness and occasional damp or mold complaints. Expedia's overall 5.4/10 reflects that mixed picture, although several recent stays were positive. Pool feedback is inconsistent, so confirm its condition before booking around it. We'd skip this if reliable upkeep and consistently clean rooms are priorities.

• Best for: short historic-center stays; budget travelers comfortable with dated surroundings

• Watch out for: worn rooms and facilities; uneven cleanliness and damp reports; mixed feedback on pool condition

• Location: Walkable Zona 1 setting near the cathedral, Central Market and historic sights.

• Rooms: Basic, dated rooms with ceiling fans; maintenance is a recurring concern.

• Cleanliness: Some recent guests praise it, but negative reports remain recurrent.

• Service: Several recent guests praise helpful staff; experiences are not uniformly positive.

• Amenities: Restaurant and pool confirmed by the hotel; booking sites also list a gym and public-area Wi-Fi.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast costs extra; self-parking is listed as free, and pet policies conflict across sites.
