Axel's take: 9.0/10

A strong downtown base with excellent basics; request a room away from traffic. an independent mid-range city hotel near Guadalajara’s historic center, scored for what it is.

Hotel Portobelo is an independent mid-range city hotel that gets the important things right: clean rooms, comfortable beds and a location handy for exploring Guadalajara. We'd pick it for a sightseeing trip rather than a hotel-centered vacation. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness and comfort, while Tripadvisor reviews reinforce the friendly-service picture. Juárez light rail is close by, and free underground parking makes it practical for drivers, too.

The main compromise is the busy intersection: several recent Expedia guests report traffic noise, although others find their rooms quiet. Request a rear-facing room if sleep is a priority. Restaurant feedback is less consistent than room feedback, and breakfast costs extra unless included in your booking. We'd skip it if a quiet setting matters more than central convenience.

• Best for: value-minded city explorers; travelers using light rail; drivers wanting included parking

• Watch out for: traffic noise in street-facing rooms; mixed restaurant feedback; breakfast not automatically included

• Location: Near Juárez station, within walking reach of historic-center sights; set on a busy intersection.

• Rooms: Guests regularly praise comfortable beds and well-kept rooms; rear-facing rooms are the safer noise-conscious request.

• Cleanliness: A standout strength, with consistently strong ratings and repeated recent praise across sites.

• Service: Generally friendly and helpful, with occasional exceptions rather than a broad negative pattern.

• Amenities: Officially offers a restaurant-bar, free Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service and reception, plus free parking.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast is generally extra unless your booking includes it; self-parking is complimentary.
