Axel's take: 7.4/10

A characterful budget base, but maintenance and noise make it an uneven pick. A simple budget hostel and guesthouse with private rooms, scored for what it is.

Casa VilaSanta is a simple budget hostel and guesthouse, best approached as an inexpensive base rather than a polished hotel. Its colorful courtyard, shared kitchen and rooftop terrace give it more personality than a basic room-only stay. Recent Expedia guests praise the helpful staff, convenient location and generally clean, spacious private rooms. We'd consider it for exploring Guadalajara without spending much on accommodation.

The catch is consistency. Expedia's positive overall picture contrasts with weaker Booking.com scores, especially for facilities and comfort. Maintenance complaints recur across sites, and courtyard noise can carry into bedrooms. Breakfast is included but basic; bed comfort also divides guests. It's good for travelers comfortable with worn furnishings and communal spaces. We'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone expecting reliably modern bathrooms and hotel-style polish.

• Best for: Budget-minded city explorers; Solo travelers wanting a private room; Travelers who use a shared kitchen

• Watch out for: Courtyard noise carries into rooms; Uneven maintenance and bathroom condition; Very basic included breakfast

• Location: Convenient for Expiatorio, restaurants and Juárez station, with the historic center within walking distance.

• Rooms: Private rooms can be spacious and have air conditioning, but furnishings, bathrooms and bed comfort vary.

• Cleanliness: Many recent guests praise clean rooms, but lower Booking.com scores and some Google complaints suggest inconsistency.

• Service: Helpful staff receive frequent praise, though service is not uniformly reliable across guest reports.

• Amenities: Shared kitchen, courtyard, rooftop terrace, Wi-Fi and basic continental breakfast are the useful extras.

• Fees and surprises: Parking carries an extra charge; Booking.com also flags a bank-transfer deposit requirement, so confirm payment terms.
