Axel's take: 7.5/10

Choose it for colonial character and location, not polished rooms or guaranteed quiet. a simple historic hotel in Guadalajara’s old center, scored for what it is.

Hotel Francés is a simple historic hotel whose colonial architecture and central location are more compelling than its rooms. It’s a good pick for travelers who want to explore Guadalajara’s old center on foot and can accept some wear. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, while the restaurant and rooftop terrace add appeal beyond the basics.

The trade-off is uneven upkeep. Despite the official website advertising remodeled rooms, recent feedback still describes dated bathrooms, worn furnishings and maintenance problems; cleanliness earns more praise than the condition of the building. Evening entertainment can mean noise, and guests reported elevator outages in winter 2025–26, so confirm it works if stairs are difficult. Breakfast costs extra, and parking may involve a nearby garage. We’d skip it for a reliably quiet, modern stay.

• Best for: sightseers exploring on foot; travelers who enjoy historic buildings; budget-conscious visitors comfortable with basic rooms

• Watch out for: uneven room and bathroom upkeep; evening music and noise; confirm elevator operation before arrival

• Location: Excellent old-center base, a short walk from the cathedral, Teatro Degollado and metro.

• Rooms: Layouts vary; the hotel advertises remodeling, but recent guests still report tired furnishings and bathrooms.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised on Expedia, though bathroom odors and inconsistent cleaning appear in some feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent positives across sites.

• Amenities: Mexican restaurant, bars, rooftop terrace and Wi-Fi; Booking.com’s Wi-Fi rating is notably weak.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and airport transfers cost extra; the hotel advertises free parking, but guests describe an off-site garage.
