Axel's take: 8.6/10

Choose it for the pyramids and gardens, not cutting-edge luxury. a five-star garden resort beside the Giza Pyramids, scored for what it is.

Marriott Mena House is a five-star garden resort whose strongest luxury is its setting beside the pyramids. We'd choose it for a Giza-focused stay: breakfast with that backdrop, spacious grounds and an outdoor pool make the location more than a photo opportunity. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise comfortable beds, cleanliness and welcoming staff. Book a pyramid-view category if the view matters; not every room has one.

The trade-off is polish. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests describe some dated rooms and bathrooms, with occasional slow restaurant service. The historic Palace wing remains closed for restoration, while wedding setups can bring evening noise and obstruct restaurant views. It's a strong sightseeing splurge, but we'd skip it for sleek contemporary luxury or a downtown-focused Cairo itinerary.

• Best for: pyramid-focused sightseeing; couples prioritizing views; families wanting pool downtime

• Watch out for: Some rooms and bathrooms feel dated; Palace wing closed for restoration; Wedding noise and temporary view obstructions

• Location: Excellent for the pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum; less convenient for central Cairo.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and balconies; choose the view category carefully, and expect some dated finishes.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor ratings.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff draw widespread praise; restaurant pacing occasionally disappoints.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, children's pool, spa, gym and several restaurants; no confirmed indoor pool.

• Fees and surprises: Parking costs extra; breakfast depends on the booking, and airport transport is not a complimentary shuttle.
