Axel's take: 6.5/10

A workable budget stopover, but housekeeping and room condition are uneven. A basic 2-star roadside motel in south Edmonton, scored for what it is.

Royal Lodge is a basic 2-star motel on Gateway Boulevard, best treated as a practical overnight stop rather than somewhere to linger. Free parking, in-room fridges and microwaves make it useful for travelers driving through south Edmonton. Recent Expedia guests often praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and straightforward check-in; Booking.com feedback also includes satisfied repeat visitors. It's a reasonable budget option if your priority is somewhere simple to sleep.

The compromise is consistency. Recent guests describe both clean, comfortable rooms and others with stained bedding, missed cleaning or worn fittings. Noise from neighboring rooms and nighttime activity also crops up. Request a non-smoking room, check it on arrival and confirm the damage-deposit terms. We'd skip it if dependable housekeeping or undisturbed sleep matters more than saving money.

• Best for: Budget travelers with a car; Short south Edmonton stopovers

• Watch out for: Uneven housekeeping and room upkeep; Neighbor noise and nighttime activity; Damage deposit and no elevator

• Location: Gateway Boulevard location suits drivers visiting south Edmonton shops and restaurants.

• Rooms: Basic rooms with fridges and microwaves; comfort and maintenance vary.

• Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms, but recent complaints show recurring housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn frequent praise, though problem handling receives mixed feedback.

• Amenities: Free parking and Wi-Fi, laundry facilities and a 24-hour front desk; no elevator.

• Fees and surprises: A refundable damage deposit is required; smoking rooms are sold, so select carefully.
