Axel's take: 8.2/10

A friendly, stylish Dublin base, provided you travel light. a design-led 4-star with compact rooms in Smithfield, scored for what it is.

The Hendrick is a design-led 4-star in Smithfield, better suited to a short city break than a spacious hotel retreat. We'd pick it for its helpful staff, comfortable beds and convenient tram connections. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness and warm service; the street-art interiors and sociable bar give it character without making it a luxury stay.

The main compromise is space. Small rooms and limited luggage storage recur across reviews, and the hotel itself acknowledges the compact layout. That makes it a stronger choice for light-packing couples or solo travelers than families spreading out with suitcases. Hot breakfast is available, while parking is paid and off-site. We'd skip it if generous bedrooms and full-service four-star comforts matter more than a practical base for exploring Dublin.

• Best for: short Dublin city breaks; light-packing couples and solo travelers; travelers using public transport

• Watch out for: small bedrooms and limited luggage space; paid off-site parking; more compact city hotel than luxury four-star

• Location: Smithfield base with nearby Luas access and walkable sightseeing connections.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds win praise, but cramped layouts are the recurring drawback.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Expedia, Tripadvisor and Booking.com feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the clearest cross-site highlight.

• Amenities: Bar, hot breakfast, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and 24-hour reception cover city-break essentials.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast costs extra unless included; parking is off-site, and early arrival or late departure can incur fees.
