Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong Dublin townhouse choice, with excellent hospitality but old-building compromises. A historic 3-star Georgian townhouse hotel overlooking St Stephen’s Green, scored for what it is.

Stauntons is a historic 3-star townhouse hotel that delivers more character and personal attention than its modest classification suggests. We'd put it high on the list for a Dublin city break: St Stephen’s Green is opposite, Grafton Street is close, and the rear garden offers somewhere pleasant to unwind. Recent Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and breakfast; comfortable, individually decorated rooms round out the appeal.

The Georgian layout brings real compromises: there is no lift or wheelchair-accessible room, and the hotel says rooms have fans rather than air-conditioning. Smaller categories can feel tight, and some front-facing rooms pick up traffic noise. Parking is paid and off-site. We'd skip it if step-free access or reliable summer cooling matters more than atmosphere.

• Best for: Couples on a Dublin city break; Travelers who enjoy historic townhouse hotels; Sightseers exploring on foot

• Watch out for: No lift or wheelchair-accessible rooms; No air-conditioning; fans provided; Compact rooms and possible street noise

• Location: Opposite St Stephen’s Green, a short walk from Grafton Street, with private access to Iveagh Gardens.

• Rooms: Characterful and generally comfortable; room sizes vary, and front-facing rooms can hear traffic.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback on several sites.

• Service: Friendly, attentive staff are among the most consistently praised features.

• Amenities: Well-reviewed breakfast, garden, small bar and free Wi-Fi; no full-service restaurant.

• Fees and surprises: Paid off-site parking; check breakfast inclusion, and note charges for early check-in or late checkout.
