Axel's take on The Forks & Broadway: #2 of 8 in Winnipeg, 7.0/10
Winnipeg’s easiest first stay, with riverside space instead of a clubbing scene. Riverside character and central sightseeing access carry it into second, but fewer doorstep options and weaker value keep it behind downtown.
The Forks puts the market, riverfront public spaces, Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Children’s Museum together in one easy introduction to Winnipeg. Broadway offers a more conventional downtown setting, with the market reached on foot rather than immediately outside. This is my first choice for families, couples and visitors who want sightseeing without organizing every outing.
It is not one continuous entertainment strip: Broadway and The Forks feel different, and the railway approaches shape the walk between them. Locals repeatedly recommend this part of town for walkability. Choose the Exchange instead if your priority is hopping between independent bars and restaurants late into the evening.
- Best for: first-time visitors, families, couples, luxury travelers
- Skip it if: Late-night bar-hopping is the main event; You expect every Broadway address to overlook the rivers
- Getting around: Walk to the museums and market; D12/D13 link The Forks directly with YWG, while Broadway has additional bus connections.
- After dark: The Common supports an evening out; expect a calmer return along Broadway than around downtown’s late venues.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $245 a night · usually 7% under the public rate

How to choose
- Choose Inn At The Forks if you want The Forks sightseeing and riverside walks close at hand, with an optional spa break.
- Choose The Fort Garry Hotel, Spa and Conference Centre, an Ascend Collection Hotel if historic railway-hotel character and Union Station access outweigh the risk of ballroom noise.
- Choose Norwood Hotel if you prefer a cheaper St. Boniface base with renovated rooms and on-site restaurants.
What paying more buys
Norwood is cheaper than most here, with renovated rooms and dining, but no gym or pool. Paying more for Inn At The Forks buys immediate sightseeing convenience, generous rooms and a spa available at extra cost; The Fort Garry adds historic character. Neither upgrade is essential for hospital visits or days spent mostly out. Typical rates with Axel here run from $172 a night at Norwood Hotel to $260 at Inn At The Forks (last 30 days).
