Axel's take on Carolina Beach & Kure Beach: #4 of 6 in Wilmington, 5.7/10
Choose Carolina for boardwalk evenings, or Kure for a quieter beach holiday. Beach character and reasonable value outweigh limited sightseeing access, but hotel quality trails the top three and downtown outings require planning.
These are two different beach moods on Pleasure Island. Carolina Beach's Boardwalk and Lake Park Boulevard bring casual food, bars and seasonal amusements; Kure Beach, farther south along Fort Fisher Boulevard, suits slower days around the pier. Carolina Beach State Park adds trails and paddling away from the ocean.
Choose Carolina Beach for family entertainment and an evening scene, or Kure for quieter beach time. Neither is a convenient base for repeated downtown Wilmington outings. Crucially, the Fort Fisher aquarium closed on May 26, 2026, for a multiyear expansion; do not choose Kure expecting an aquarium visit.
- Best for: families, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You plan daily sightseeing in downtown Wilmington; The Fort Fisher aquarium is your main reason for visiting
- Getting around: Walk local Boardwalk or pier blocks; no fixed-route bus reaches the island, but booked RideMICRO Zone 3 connects via Monkey Junction; use a taxi or rental car from ILM.
- After dark: Carolina Beach has bars and seasonal Boardwalk entertainment; Kure is quieter and offers fewer late-night choices.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $147 a night · usually 13% under the public rate
