#4 of 7 hotels in Historic Downtown & Riverwalk by Axel's take. Historic Downtown & Riverwalk is #1 of 6 places to stay in Wilmington. The best hotels in Historic Downtown & Riverwalk, ranked · Where to stay in Wilmington

Axel's take: 8.1/10

River views and welcoming staff make this a strong downtown base, with elevator work underway. a simple, limited-service riverfront hotel in downtown Wilmington, scored for what it is.

This is a simple, limited-service riverfront hotel whose strongest selling points are its setting and staff, not polished interiors. We'd pick it for exploring downtown Wilmington on foot: the Riverwalk, restaurants and convention center are close by. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the river views, helpful employees and generally clean rooms. Included breakfast adds practical value.

The building shows its age, with dated-room comments across sites, and parking is paid and limited. More importantly, Best Western currently confirms the elevator is out of service; Expedia lists elevator renovations from September 25 through December 31, 2026, subject to change. A September guest also reported reduced breakfast service during the disruption. We'd skip it for now if stairs are difficult, and choose elsewhere if contemporary rooms matter more than location.

  • Best for: downtown sightseeing on foot; convention-center visitors; travelers prioritizing river views over stylish interiors

  • Watch out for: Elevator currently out of service; Paid parking with limited spaces; Dated interiors and possible breakfast disruption

  • Location: On the Cape Fear Riverwalk, within walking distance of downtown dining and the convention center.

  • Rooms: River views are a highlight; interiors are functional rather than contemporary, with exterior-corridor access.

  • Cleanliness: Recent reviews are predominantly positive, despite occasional housekeeping and bathroom-condition complaints.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across guest-review sites.

  • Amenities: Breakfast, Wi-Fi and fitness facilities are listed; confirm breakfast arrangements during elevator work.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking and pets cost extra; confirm elevator restoration before booking if step-free access is essential.
