Axel's take on McCormick Ranch & Gainey Ranch: #4 of 5 in Scottsdale, 6.0/10
Choose lakes and leisurely mornings over nightlife and sightseeing on foot. McCormick and Gainey offer calm surroundings, good hotels and useful road connections, but very little immediately outside the door and limited value.
McCormick Ranch brings lakes, golf-course edges and recreational paths around Hayden Road and McCormick Parkway. Gainey Ranch adds a more enclosed, polished feel around Doubletree Ranch Road, with restaurants at the Shops Gainey Village on Scottsdale Road. The appeal is an unhurried routine: a walk or bike ride, breakfast, then time by the pool.
This is our strongest quiet-family choice, not a substitute for Old Town. Pleasant paths do not necessarily put dinner within an easy walk of your accommodation, and Gainey's gated residential streets and golf facilities are not public sightseeing territory. Choose it with a car; skip it for gallery-hopping or late nights.
- Best for: families, a quiet stay, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want nightlife outside the door; You do not want to drive for meals or sightseeing
- Getting around: Bus 72 serves Scottsdale Road and the free weekday MLHD trolley follows Hayden; recreational paths are useful locally, but use a car or taxi from PHX, AZA or SCF.
- After dark: Dinner patios provide the evening activity; the surrounding planned residential streets are subdued rather than a late-night destination.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $230 a night · usually 8% under the public rate

- Doubletree Ranch Road near Scottsdale Road. The useful dinner-and-shopping pocket for relaxed stays; choose near the village shops rather than assuming every residential lane connects. Hotels here: Sonesta Suites Scottsdale Gainey Ranch, Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort.
- McCormick Parkway near Hayden Road. Favor this stretch for leisurely walks and bike rides around the connected path network, not nightlife outside the door. Hotels here: The Scottsdale Resort and Spa, Curio Collection by Hilton.

Hotels here: Hampton Inn & Suites Phoenix/Scottsdale on Shea Boulevard, Holiday Inn Express Scottsdale North by IHG, Extended Stay America Suites Phoenix Scottsdale.
How to choose
- Choose Hampton Inn & Suites Phoenix/Scottsdale on Shea Boulevard if you want dependable service, breakfast and free parking without resort extras or a full-service restaurant.
- Choose Sonesta Suites Scottsdale Gainey Ranch if you need a full kitchen, roomy suites and walkable Gainey Village dining; a destination fee applies.
- Choose Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort if pool days, a waterslide and spa time justify one of the pricier stays; dining service can lag.
What paying more buys
Extended Stay America offers inexpensive kitchens but aging rooms; mid-priced Sonesta Suites adds a more relaxed courtyard setting, breakfast and consistently praised staff. Grand Hyatt’s much higher rate buys refreshed rooms, extensive pools, a waterslide and spa facilities. The premium is unnecessary if your days revolve around family visits or sightseeing rather than resort facilities. Typical rates with Axel here run from $123 a night at Extended Stay America Suites Phoenix Scottsdale to $557 at Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort (last 30 days).
