Axel's take on Termini & Esquilino: #6 of 9 in Rome, 7.7/10
Choose rail convenience, then investigate the street rather than the station label. Strong hotels, plentiful nearby eating and direct Fiumicino rail support Termini, while weaker character and only middling value limit its overall appeal.
Termini makes arrivals, onward trains and cross-city metro journeys straightforward. Esquilino adds much more than station services: Santa Maria Maggiore, Piazza Vittorio and a food scene mixing Roman trattorias with Chinese, Indian and other international kitchens. Choose this when railway logistics and practical eating matter more than a picturesque doorstep.
Do not treat the whole neighborhood as one experience. Some recent visitors find the station approaches scruffy and uncomfortable after dark; the dining streets farther into Esquilino have a different purpose and rhythm. Check the exact street and arrival route. For an unhurried romantic stay or dependable quiet, we would choose another neighborhood.
- Best for: travelers on a budget, business trips and conventions, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: A picturesque doorstep is essential; Station crowds and traffic bother you
- Getting around: Metro A/B at Termini and A at Vittorio Emanuele; Santa Maria Maggiore is walkable. FCO has the direct Leonardo Express to Termini; CIA requires Airlink’s bus-and-train connection, not direct airport rail.
- After dark: Station-side blocks draw mixed visitor reactions; restaurant streets toward Piazza Vittorio offer a different evening experience.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $264 a night
