Axel's take on Convention Center & South Virginia: #3 of 7 in Reno, 5.7/10
Best for convention schedules and resort evenings, not wandering Reno on foot. The strongest hotel selection and a clear convention purpose lift South Virginia, while spread-out streets, fewer nearby attractions and weaker value hold it back.
South Virginia around Peckham Lane and South McCarran Boulevard is practical Reno: the convention complex, large casino campuses and shopping destinations rather than a compact visitor quarter. It works particularly well when your schedule revolves around an exhibition or a spa-and-dinner evening. Meadowood Mall adds indoor shopping farther south along the corridor.
Do not confuse this with Midtown simply because both use South Virginia Street. Wide roads and large properties interrupt the walking experience, and heading downtown is a bus or driving decision. Choose it when your main destination is here; skip it if independent cafes, museums and an evening stroll are the point of your trip.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, luxury travelers, shopping
- Skip it if: You want a compact walking neighborhood; Most of your plans are downtown
- Getting around: RTC RAPID Virginia and Route 1 run along South Virginia; RNO's Route 12 connects through Meadowood Mall, requiring a transfer for the convention corridor. Taxi or a confirmed lodging shuttle is simpler with luggage.
- After dark: Expect entertainment and dining inside casino campuses rather than a continuous street scene between them.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $182 a night · usually 10% under the public rate

Where to look in Convention Center & South Virginia
- Virginia Street at Plumb Lane. Choose this northern end for the Experience District's mixed-use setting and dining, rather than convention-hall proximity. Hotels here: Peppermill Resort Spa Casino, Kasa Archive Reno-Tahoe, Element by Marriott Reno Experience District.
- Virginia Street at Peckham Lane. Stay around the convention complex when exhibitions drive your schedule; downtown sightseeing is a separate outing. Hotels here: Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.
- Meadowood Mall Circle. Look around the mall for shopping-led stays and practical errands, rather than a downtown-style evening stroll. Hotels here: Aiden by Best Western South Reno, Home2 Suites by Hilton Reno, TownePlace Suites by Marriott Reno.
How to choose
- Choose Peppermill Resort Spa Casino if you want a cheaper resort-and-spa break; choose a tower room and check renovation disturbance.
- Choose Kasa Archive Reno-Tahoe if you need a full kitchen and laundry and are comfortable with online check-in and remote support.
- Choose Atlantis Casino Resort Spa if a direct convention-center skybridge matters more than avoiding casino smoke.
What paying more buys
Cheaper Peppermill already supplies extensive dining, pools and a highly praised spa; a higher rate is not automatically a resort upgrade. Compared with cheaper Aiden, Home2 Suites buys spacious kitchenette suites and included breakfast. That difference is less useful for short stopovers without cooking or extra-space needs. Typical rates with Axel here run from $106 a night at Peppermill Resort Spa Casino to $236 at TownePlace Suites by Marriott Reno (last 30 days).
