Axel's take on Majorstuen: #8 of 12 in Oslo, 6.6/10
A practical west-side base for shopping, park visits and outdoor excursions. Useful transport, shopping streets and neighbourhood character help, but limited hotel choice, fewer nearby attractions and poor value weaken the overall case.
Majorstuen gives you everyday city life around Bogstadveien and Hegdehaugsveien rather than a waterfront sightseeing district. Shopping is the obvious strength, with cafés and residential streets behind the main thoroughfares. Frogner Park is accessible on foot, while the metro makes the neighbourhood useful for trips towards Holmenkollen and other parts of the city.
Choose it when your plans extend beyond central museums, or when you prefer a functioning neighbourhood to a visitor-heavy address. Skip it if most days will revolve around Bjørvika and the harbour. Majorstuen is also part of the metro upgrade programme, so check planned closures rather than assuming the usual interchange will operate unchanged throughout your stay.
- Best for: shopping, sports fans
- Skip it if: Your itinerary is mainly the eastern waterfront; You want harbour views and promenades
- Getting around: Majorstuen normally has metro lines 1–5 plus trams 12, 15 and 19 nearby; Bogstadveien and Frogner Park are walkable. OSL requires a train to Nationaltheatret then metro; TRF adds its airport shuttle before the train. Check upgrade closures.
- After dark: A neighbourhood dining-and-pub scene rather than Oslo’s main club district; busy roads are the more predictable disturbance.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $224 a night

What paying more buys
Saga Hotel Oslo costs a little more than Thon Hotel Gyldenløve for a quieter residential setting, boutique character and consistently praised service. Both offer included breakfast, and neither removes every compact-room compromise. Stay with Gyldenløve if direct shopping-street access matters more than a calmer setting.
