Axel's take on Fornebu & Lysaker: #11 of 12 in Oslo, 4.5/10
A work-and-arena base where proximity to Lysaker station makes the difference. Good value supports work and arena stays, but limited nearby options and variable access to Lysaker station undermine its usefulness for sightseeing.
Choose this western side of Oslo for a specific reason: nearby offices, an event at Unity Arena, or a quieter stay away from downtown. Lysaker is the transport asset, with ordinary trains and airport trains. Fornebu stretches farther out, so a peninsula address should not be mistaken for sleeping beside the railway station.
The distinction matters every day: some stays work neatly by rail, while others require a connecting bus before sightseeing even begins. The future metro is not an existing benefit; Oslo’s published target is an opening in 2029, with construction still part of the picture. For most first visits, central Oslo is the more rewarding compromise.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You are visiting mainly for central Oslo; You want several late-night options on foot
- Getting around: Lysaker has trains and direct OSL airport rail; bus 31 links into Fornebu, where station access varies considerably. TRF requires its airport shuttle before the train. Unity Arena is about 15–20 minutes on foot from Lysaker; there is no operating Fornebu metro yet.
- After dark: Arena events bring concentrated arrival and departure activity; otherwise expect a subdued evening, an inference from the work-and-residential setting rather than extensive visitor night reports.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $130 a night

Where to look in Fornebu & Lysaker
- Snarøyveien near Unity Arena. Prioritise the arena approach for event-focused stays, with coastal paths providing something to do beyond the venue. Hotels here: Quality Hotel Expo.
- Rolfsbukta waterfront. Choose this coastal stretch for waterside walks and residential surroundings rather than immediate railway access. Hotels here: Scandic Fornebu.
- Fornebukta and Fornebuveien. Look towards the bay for green surroundings and coastal walks; this is a peninsula base, not a station-side stay. Hotels here: Radisson Blu Park Hotel, Oslo.
How to choose
- Choose Quality Hotel Expo if Unity Arena or nearby work drives the trip, and buses outside are more useful than downtown walkability.
- Choose Scandic Fornebu if you want waterfront walks, loan bikes and a terrace at the cheaper end here; accept the city commute.
- Choose Radisson Blu Park Hotel, Oslo if green surroundings and refreshed rooms appeal more than waterfront-terrace amenities; clarify parking re-entry terms.
What paying more buys
Quality Hotel Expo costs slightly more than Scandic Fornebu for a practical arena-and-business setup with buses outside, not an obvious luxury upgrade. The pricier Radisson Blu Park offers green surroundings and refreshed rooms, while Scandic already has waterfront walks and a terrace. Pay extra for the setting that fits your plans, not to shorten the downtown commute. Typical rates with Axel here run from $120 a night at Scandic Fornebu to $138 at Radisson Blu Park Hotel, Oslo (last 30 days).
