Axel's take on Kaanapali: #2 of 6 in Maui, 6.4/10
The easiest beach-holiday base, provided you are happy in a resort district. Kaanapali pairs strong hotels and a distinctive beach setting with an easy resort routine, but weaker value and cross-island access hold it back.
Kaanapali makes a classic Maui beach holiday straightforward. Around Kaanapali Parkway, Whalers Village and Puʻu Kekaʻa (Black Rock), you can move between beach time, meals and shopping without constantly organizing transport. Families particularly benefit from the concentration of activities; recent visitors describe teenagers enjoying that independence.
The trade-off is a resort district rather than a town, with crowds around the main beach. Erosion has interrupted parts of the southern beachwalk, so do not assume an uninterrupted promenade. Nearby Lahaina is still rebuilding, not the former evening destination. Skip this base if most days involve East Maui or Upcountry driving.
- Best for: first-time visitors, families, travelers without a car, shopping
- Skip it if: You dislike resort-district crowds; Most days involve East Maui or Upcountry
- Getting around: Walk the main resort strip; buses 23 and 29 stop at Whalers Village; from OGG drive or take 35/40 to Kahului Transit Center, then 29.
- After dark: Sunset ceremonies, restaurant terraces and resort entertainment make evenings sociable, but this is not a late-night town.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $711 a night

Where to look in Kaanapali
- Beachwalk beside Whalers Village. The easiest pocket for beach-and-dinner walking, with shopping and restaurant terraces close together. Hotels here: Kaanapali Alii, The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka'anapali, Marriott's Maui Ocean Club - Molokai, Maui & Lanai Towers.
- Southern Nohea Kai Drive. Choose the southern resort stretch for on-site holidays; shoreline erosion makes beachwalk detours part of the trade-off. Hotels here: Hyatt Vacation Club at Ka'anapali Beach, Maui, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa.
- Kekaa Drive near Black Rock. Stay around the headland for beach-first days; the northern side feels quieter than the main resort strip. Hotels here: Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows.
How to choose
- Choose Hyatt Vacation Club at Ka'anapali Beach, Maui if separate bedrooms, full cooking facilities and family pools matter more than sand directly outside.
- Choose The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka'anapali if you want waterslides and dining beside Whalers Village without organizing drives.
- Choose Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows if you want a much cheaper beachfront resort and can accept uneven rooms and simpler comforts.
What paying more buys
Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows is much cheaper than most here; pricier Kaanapali Alii buys large condos, kitchens and laundry near Whalers Village. Hyatt Vacation Club adds separate-bedroom villas and distinct family and adults-only pools. The extra space is less worthwhile for couples who mainly want beach time and won’t cook. Typical rates with Axel here run from $267 a night at Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows to $1,146 at Kaanapali Alii (last 30 days).
