#6 of 9 hotels in Wailea by Axel's take. Wailea is #3 of 6 places to stay in Maui. The best hotels in Wailea, ranked · Where to stay in Maui

Axel's take: 8.8/10

Excellent family space and resort access, with a hillside walk and some uneven upkeep. Luxury three-bedroom villa residences across from Grand Wailea, scored for what it is.

Ho‘olei is a gated collection of luxury three-bedroom villas, not a beachfront hotel. It’s a strong pick for families wanting room to spread out: full kitchens, generous lanais and a quieter community pool, plus Grand Wailea’s resort amenities. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests strongly praise the space, helpful staff and family-friendly setup. For multigenerational trips, the residential layout makes more sense than separate hotel rooms.

The compromise is separation: the beach, main pools and resort dining are across the road and downhill. Guests appreciate the shuttle, but popping back for forgotten sunscreen takes planning. A few detailed Tripadvisor reports from late 2024 and early 2025 describe stained carpets and maintenance failures, although newer reviews are much more positive. Confirm your villa’s condition and resort-access inclusions; we’d skip it if immediate beachfront convenience or consistently pristine interiors are essential.

Best for: Multigenerational family vacations; Groups wanting full kitchens and shared living space; Families balancing resort activities with privacy
Watch out for: Hillside walk to the beach and main resort; Some reports of uneven villa upkeep; Confirm resort privileges with your booking
Location: Gated hillside setting across the road from Grand Wailea, rather than directly on the beach.
Rooms: Three-bedroom villas offer substantial living space, full kitchens and lanais; condition deserves checking.
Cleanliness: Recent Expedia feedback is strongly positive, with some older Tripadvisor reports of stained carpets.
Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, concierge assistance and convenient shuttle service.
Amenities: Community outdoor pool and gym, plus Grand Wailea resort access through the resort-managed offering.
Fees and surprises: A daily resort charge applies; Hilton lists complimentary parking with a garage and covered carport.
