Axel's take on Centro Histórico: #4 of 5 in Lima, 5.8/10
Sleep beside Lima’s colonial sights only if history drives your itinerary. Centro Histórico combines colonial sights, plentiful nearby stops and the strongest value, but weaker hotels and more deliberate evening planning limit its all-round appeal.
Centro Histórico puts Lima’s colonial architecture into your daily routine. Walk from Plaza San Martín along Jirón de la Unión to Plaza Mayor, then explore churches, balconies and the San Francisco catacombs. Traditional eating and drinking places give it more depth than a monuments-only stop; this is the strongest choice for a tightly focused history stay.
It is not our default for a first visit. Recent forum advice repeatedly favors visiting downtown by day and sleeping in the southern districts. If you stay, check the exact block and arrange late returns rather than assuming every route feels equally comfortable after dark. Coastal walks and Barranco evenings become separate journeys.
- Best for: museums and culture, travelers on a budget
- Skip it if: You want relaxed, spontaneous late-night wandering; Most of your plans are in Miraflores or Barranco
- Getting around: Walk Plaza Mayor–Jirón de la Unión–Plaza San Martín; Metropolitano stations include Jirón de la Unión and Colmena; from LIM, use AeroDirecto Centro toward Plaza San Martín or an authorized taxi, checking current stops before departure.
- After dark: There are established evening drinking spots, but recent forum advice favors daylight sightseeing and arranged rides for late returns rather than open-ended wandering.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $52 a night
Where to stay in Lima: every neighborhood ranked
Where to look in Centro Histórico
- Plaza San Martín. Start here for architecture-focused days and the pedestrian route toward Plaza Mayor; arrange transport for late returns. Hotels here: Gran Hotel Bolivar, Hotel El Plaza Centro de Lima.
- Garcilaso de la Vega–Nicolás de Piérola. Look here for downtown errands near Plaza San Martín, accepting a traffic-heavy avenue rather than a pedestrian sightseeing street. Hotels here: Hotel San Agustin Riviera.
How to choose
- Choose Gran Hotel Bolivar if historic atmosphere and a Plaza San Martín setting outweigh modern comforts and reliably quiet nights.
- Choose Hotel San Agustin Riviera if you need a short downtown business base and can accept tired rooms; request inward-facing placement.
- Choose Hotel El Plaza Centro de Lima if you want the cheapest pick beside the historic sights and can accept noise and uneven upkeep.
What paying more buys
Gran Hotel Bolivar costs more than Hotel El Plaza, primarily buying historic character, terrace dining and included breakfast—not dependable modern comfort or quiet. Mid-priced San Agustin Riviera offers helpful staff and parking subject to availability, but its rooms are also tired. Paying extra is not worthwhile if you expect the higher rate to resolve cooling, maintenance or noise concerns. Typical rates with Axel here run from $39 a night at Hotel El Plaza Centro de Lima to $94 at Gran Hotel Bolivar (last 30 days).
