Axel's take: 7.2/10

Stay for Lima’s history, not for modern comforts or reliably quiet nights. a faded historic 3-star on Lima’s Plaza San Martín, scored for what it is.

Gran Hotel Bolivar is a historic 3-star whose appeal is atmosphere rather than polish. Its grand lobby, stained-glass dome and Plaza San Martín address make it a characterful base for exploring old Lima. We'd consider it for a short, history-focused stay: recent Expedia guests frequently praise the helpful staff and cleanliness, while Tripadvisor guests remain enthusiastic about the architecture and pisco sours.

The compromises go beyond dated décor. Reviews across sites repeatedly mention worn rooms, street or restaurant noise, and absent or ineffective air-conditioning; several recent guests also report unreliable hot water and Wi-Fi. Breakfast starts at 8 a.m., inconvenient for early departures. Gestión reported a modernization proposal in June 2026, with upper floors still out of use—not a completed refurbishment. We'd skip it for business trips, light sleepers or anyone expecting the rooms to match the grandeur downstairs.

• Best for: history and architecture enthusiasts; short stays exploring historic Lima; travelers who prefer character to polish

• Watch out for: street and restaurant noise; limited cooling and aging bathrooms; reports of unreliable hot water and Wi-Fi

• Location: Faces Plaza San Martín, with the historic center’s principal sights within walking distance.

• Rooms: Old-fashioned rooms with recurring maintenance and soundproofing complaints; do not assume air-conditioning.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength in recent Expedia feedback, despite the building’s worn condition.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff draw consistent praise, although problem resolution is less dependable.

• Amenities: Restaurant, terrace dining, included breakfast and advertised free Wi-Fi; breakfast runs 8–10 a.m.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists no parking and charges for airport transfers and early or late check-in/out; modernization remains a proposal.
