Axel's take on Speedway & West Side: #3 of 6 in Indianapolis, 4.5/10
Stay for racing and Main Street, not citywide convenience. Speedway combines the highest value score with racing character, but weaker hotels, limited doorstep options and poor citywide access make it a specialist base.
Speedway has a real small-town Main Street, not just a famous racetrack. Between 10th and 16th streets, you can link coffee, breweries, restaurants and racing memorabilia on foot; the renovated Motor Speedway Museum gives non-race days a purpose too. Stay here when motorsport is the reason for your trip.
Distinguish Main Street from the more spread-out lodging along Crawfordsville Road and the interstate approaches. Staying in Speedway does not guarantee a short walk to your track gate. Race weekends bring traffic and partying; ordinary evenings are more low-key. Most wider Indianapolis sightseeing still requires a drive or a planned bus journey.
- Best for: sports fans, museums and culture
- Skip it if: Racing is only a minor part of your trip; You want downtown attractions outside your door
- Getting around: Routes 10 on 10th Street and 25 on 16th Street connect downtown; Main Street is walkable; from IND use a taxi or Route 8 plus a downtown transfer, checking bridge and race-day detours.
- After dark: Main Street offers brewery-and-dinner evenings; race-month concerts and celebrations make event weekends a different proposition.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $118 a night · usually 8% under the public rate
