Axel's take on West Kowloon: #9 of 10 in Hong Kong, 6.2/10
Best for museum days and waterfront space, less compelling for spontaneous street life. Excellent transport and major museums cannot fully offset sparse street-level dining, weak value and a much narrower reviewed hotel selection.
West Kowloon is the clearest choice if M+, the Hong Kong Palace Museum and waterfront time are central to your stay. The Art Park offers lawns and room to wander, while the Xiqu Centre adds Cantonese opera. Families who want outdoor breaks between cultural visits have a good reason to sleep here rather than merely visit.
The drawback is the separation between museums, station complexes and older Kowloon streets. M+ advises allowing ten to fifteen minutes on foot from Kowloon station, so do not assume everything is immediately outside the exit. A daily ferry to Central improves the waterfront’s usefulness, but Jordan remains better for casual street-level meals and aimless evening wandering.
- Best for: families, museums and culture
- Skip it if: You want small food streets immediately downstairs; You dislike walks through large transport complexes
- Getting around: Tung Chung Line/Airport Express at Kowloon, Tuen Ma at Austin; museums on foot and daily ferry to Central; HKG direct by Airport Express.
- After dark: Think sunset picnics, performances and occasional live music rather than a street-by-street bar crawl.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $665 a night
