Axel's take on Port Everglades & Convention Center: #5 of 9 in Fort Lauderdale, 5.4/10
Choose convenience for a convention or cruise, not beach atmosphere. Useful access and SE 17th Street dining support this practical base, but modest character and weak value limit its broader holiday appeal.
SE 17th Street is a practical working waterfront: convention visitors, cruise passengers, marine businesses and restaurants share the same corridor. The convention center's expansion is complete, strengthening the case for staying nearby when an event is your main reason to travel. Dockside seafood restaurants and the eateries around Cordova Road give it more dining character than a generic transit stop.
The trade-off is the street itself: broad roads, junctions and scattered destinations rather than a continuous promenade. Neither the beach nor downtown is automatically an easy stroll. For cruises, confirm your terminal and arrange the appropriate transfer; proximity to the port entrance does not settle the last leg.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, food lovers
- Skip it if: You want a beach outside the door; You are choosing a base for an entire sightseeing holiday
- Getting around: BCT 40 follows SE 17th Street to the beach and downtown; walkability depends on the junctions between destinations. FLL has a short road transfer or Routes 1 then 40; use a road transfer from MIA.
- After dark: Dockside dining and pubs provide evening options, but expect separate destinations rather than a continuous late-night strip.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $243 a night · usually 5% under the public rate
