Axel's take on Downtown & 5th Street Market: #1 of 6 in Eugene, 7.8/10
The best first-visit base, especially when you want to walk to dinner. Downtown wins on character, hotel choice and easy sightseeing, with more on the doorstep than elsewhere, but weaker value and variable nighttime noise.
Stay here for Eugene's easiest all-round visit. The 5th Street Market end is polished and food-focused, while Broadway, Willamette Street and the Park Blocks bring theaters, bars and Saturday markets together. This is the simplest place to combine shopping, an evening performance and a river walk without organizing everything around a car.
Choose your street carefully: Market District dining feels different from Broadway's later bar scene. Recent visitors recommend downtown for walkability but flag train horns near its northern blocks. It is our first choice for a general visit or couples' weekend; light sleepers should prioritize their room's position rather than assume downtown will be quiet.
- Best for: first-time visitors, couples, luxury travelers, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: You need reliably quiet nights; Your entire trip revolves around campus
- Getting around: Walk between the markets, theaters and Amtrak; Eugene Station has EmX and local buses. From EUG, use a taxi/rideshare or the limited 99 Vine airport bus after checking its timetable.
- After dark: Broadway has late bars and music; the Market District leans toward dinner and drinks, with train-horn noise reported nearby.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $192 a night

What paying more buys
Compared with cheaper Downtown Inn, Inn at the 5th buys generous rooms, proactive service and market-area dining and spa access. The Gordon Hotel adds art-focused interiors and rooftop dining, but neither boutique choice guarantees quiet. Spend less if you'll mostly be out and value included parking more than those extras. Typical rates with Axel here run from $92 a night at Campus Inn & Suites Eugene Downtown to $278 at Inn at the 5th (last 30 days).
