Axel's take on Ellerslie Road & Edmonton South: #5 of 5 in Edmonton, 3.9/10
Useful for southern errands; too detached for most Edmonton holidays. Ellerslie has strong hotels and reasonable value, but its detached location, limited walkable options and modest character make it the weakest general sightseeing base.
Ellerslie Road near 101 Street and Gateway Boulevard is a functional southern stopover, with restaurants and suburban development rather than historic Edmonton. The draw is access south toward YEG, north toward South Edmonton Common and around the outskirts via Anthony Henday Drive. It makes sense when your schedule already belongs on this side of the city.
For general sightseeing, you surrender spontaneity: museums, Whyte Avenue evenings and river-valley outings become planned journeys. The airport is also a separate trip, not something on your doorstep. Bus 521 connects with Century Park, but this remains a weak no-car base. Choose it for low-key evenings and south-side errands; skip it for a city-focused first visit.
- Best for: a quiet stay, shopping
- Skip it if: This is your first city-focused visit; You want to get around without driving
- Getting around: Bus 521 serves Ellerslie Road near 101 Street and connects Century Park LRT; walking is mainly local errands; from YEG, take a taxi or 747 to Century Park, then 521.
- After dark: Our read: low-key restaurant evenings rather than nightlife, but little nightlife does not guarantee silence beside Highway 2.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $122 a night

What paying more buys
Compared with the cheaper Hampton Inn, Home2 Suites adds suite space and kitchen appliances, making the modest premium useful for longer stays. Four Points is one of the pricier picks but retains dated interiors and facility uncertainty; its premium is hard to justify if breakfast and dependable everyday practicality matter most. Typical rates with Axel here run from $107 a night at Best Western Plus South Edmonton Inn & Suites to $147 at Four Points By Sheraton Edmonton Gateway (last 30 days).
