Axel's take on Christchurch & the Liberties: #2 of 11 in Dublin, 8.7/10
Historic Dublin on your doorstep, without sleeping inside Temple Bar. Excellent walking access, plentiful nearby stops and strong hotels put historic Dublin close at hand, though traffic and less immediate rail access are compromises.
Christchurch puts you among Dublin's oldest streets, with the cathedral and Dublinia close together. Follow Francis Street for antiques and cafés or head farther into the Liberties for distilleries and the Guinness Storehouse. This is a particularly satisfying base if medieval history and the city's brewing story shape your itinerary.
The trade-off is traffic on the main roads and a walk to rail rather than a station outside your door. Dublin Castle is nearby but currently closed throughout its campus, with reopening expected in January 2027; you cannot use its grounds as a shortcut. Skip this district if you want uniformly grand streets or immediate DART access.
- Best for: first-time visitors, museums and culture
- Skip it if: You want a station immediately nearby; You prefer grand Georgian streets to mixed urban blocks
- Getting around: Walk to Temple Bar and the medieval sights; G1/G2 buses serve the main streets and Four Courts Red Line Luas is a walk away; DUB coaches stop on Usher's/Merchant's Quay or Patrick Street.
- After dark: Local pubs and restaurants offer a less concentrated nightlife scene than Temple Bar; expect a mixed residential and main-road setting.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $210 a night
