Axel's take on Glyfada & Athens Riviera: #9 of 9 in Athens, 4.6/10
A coastal holiday base with city excursions, rather than the other way round. Good hotels and coastal appeal are outweighed by weak value, fewer nearby attractions and an inconvenient journey to the historic centre.
Glyfada combines an ordinary town’s conveniences with a seaside holiday rhythm. Metaxa handles shopping, Kyprou and Laodikis supply much of the dining and nightlife, and the waterfront offers beaches, marinas and space for a longer stroll. Families who want swimming and playtime between occasional sightseeing days have a clear reason to choose it.
You are accepting a commute to the historic sights, and the coastal tram requires a change for Syntagma. Nor is every address a peaceful beach retreat: the social streets get lively late and Poseidonos is a major road. Skip it for a short first visit; choose it when the sea genuinely outranks the Acropolis.
- Best for: families, sports fans
- Skip it if: You plan to sightsee downtown every day; You require direct airport rail
- Getting around: T7 follows the coast, changing at Pikrodafni for T6 to Syntagma; shopping streets are walkable; ATH is reached by the 24-hour X96 airport bus, not direct rail.
- After dark: Kyprou and Laodikis are busy late; Glyfada is a nightlife suburb as well as a beach destination.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $294 a night

Where to look in Glyfada & Athens Riviera
- Metaxa and Kyprou. Choose central Glyfada for shopping and late dining; it suits sociable coastal breaks better than secluded beach holidays. Hotels here: Sea View Cityscape Hotel, Athens Coast Hotel.
- Voula beach tram terminus. Look around the coastal end of Voula for beach-focused days with Glyfada nearby, rather than a city-centre sightseeing base. Hotels here: Blazer Suites Hotel, Minavra Hotel.
- Vouliagmeni, Apollonos peninsula. Choose this stretch for a resort-paced seaside stay, with beach time taking priority over downtown shopping and sightseeing. Hotels here: Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens, The Margi.
How to choose
- Choose Blazer Suites Hotel if your family needs separate bedrooms, living space and a kitchenette rather than a compact hotel room.
- Choose Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens if private beaches, children's facilities and extensive pools justify a full resort stay rather than daily city excursions.
- Choose Palmyra Beach Hotel if you want a much cheaper family-friendly coastal base with a seasonal pool; avoid road-facing rooms.
What paying more buys
Palmyra Beach and Minavra keep coastal stays comparatively inexpensive. Blazer Suites buys separate living space and kitchenettes; Four Seasons Astir Palace and One&Only Aesthesis move into private beaches, extensive pools and resort facilities, with private-pool bungalows at the latter. The resort premium makes little sense if you plan to spend most days in central Athens. Typical rates with Axel here run from $79 a night at Minavra Hotel to $1,103 at Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens (last 30 days).

- Blazer Suites Hotel 9.0/10, family-run 4-star all-suite hotel near Glyfada’s beaches. Generous suites and genuinely attentive service, with a busy coastal-road trade-off. Why it's here: generous apartment-style suites with kitchenettes, separate living rooms and attentive service. Accept: a busy coastal road outside, not direct beachfront.
- Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens 8.9/10, five-star beachfront luxury resort on the Athens Riviera. A strong seaside splurge, better for resort days than daily Athens sightseeing. Why it's here: a full beach-resort stay with private beaches, varied pools and a kids' club. Accept: costly dining, peak-season bustle and driving to central Athens.
- One&Only Aesthesis 8.6/10, ultra-luxury beachfront resort in Glyfada on the Athenian Riviera. Beautiful pool bungalows and strong resort comforts, with service that isn't always seamless. Why it's here: private-pool bungalow options and substantial beachfront resort comforts. Accept: uneven service, possible noise and redevelopment cranes visible offshore.

- Divani Apollon Palace & Thalasso 8.2/10, traditional 5-star seaside resort on the Athens Riviera. Choose it for Riviera relaxation and strong facilities, not cutting-edge luxury. - Minavra Hotel 8.1/10, simple 2-star near Voula beach on the Athens Riviera. A strong budget Riviera base, with helpful staff and compact rooms. Why it's here: helpful round-the-clock staff and a low-cost base near Voula beach. Accept: compact rooms, coastal-road bustle and stairs before the lift.
- Athens Coast Hotel 8.1/10, compact 4-star in central Glyfada, not a beachfront resort. A strong Glyfada base, but next-door construction compromises the downtime. Why it's here: a cheaper, walkable base for central Glyfada shopping and dining. Accept: reported neighbouring construction, compact rooms and uneven sound insulation.
