#1 of 5 hotels in Syngrou & Neos Kosmos by Axel's take. Syngrou & Neos Kosmos is #7 of 9 places to stay in Athens. The best hotels in Syngrou & Neos Kosmos, ranked · Where to stay in Athens

Axel's take: 8.4/10

Warm service and rooftop breakfasts outweigh a less central, traffic-heavy location. a practical 4-star city hotel on busy Syngrou Avenue, scored for what it is.

Athenaeum Smart is a practical 4-star city hotel rather than a luxury retreat, and we think it's a strong pick for comfort and service for the money. Recent Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. Breakfast is the standout: a generous buffet in the top-floor restaurant with Acropolis views.

The compromise is the setting on busy Syngrou Avenue, roughly a half-hour walk from Plaka; nearby buses make sightseeing easier. Traffic noise crops up across reviews despite the hotel's advertised soundproof windows. The hotel says its rooftop restaurant operates only for breakfast, so don't expect evening rooftop dining. We'd skip it for a quiet, old-town doorstep experience; travelers needing step-free access should confirm the route directly, given a detailed guest report of stairs before the lifts.

  • Best for: value-minded couples; sightseers comfortable using buses; travelers who prioritize helpful staff

  • Watch out for: traffic noise from Syngrou Avenue; a substantial walk to the historic center; confirm step-free access before booking

  • Location: An urban avenue base with nearby buses, not a beachfront or old-town hotel.

  • Rooms: Generally comfortable and well-sized; some have Acropolis views, but road noise can intrude.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Booking.com and Expedia feedback.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff are the clearest recurring highlight.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi and rooftop breakfast; the official site says the rooftop restaurant is breakfast-only.

  • Fees and surprises: A seasonal accommodation tax is collected locally; check whether breakfast is included in your booking.
