Axel's take on Sloterdijk: #11 of 12 in Amsterdam, 5.5/10
A practical rail base, but not the Amsterdam most visitors came for. Good hotel value and useful rail links cannot overcome sparse nearby attractions and a station-and-office setting with limited holiday character.
Stay here for the transport interchange, not the streetscape. Around Orlyplein and the station, rail lines, offices and modern accommodation shape the experience. The old Sloterdijk village offers a small contrast, but it does not turn the station district into a canal neighbourhood. This is a deliberate logistical choice rather than an atmospheric one.
It works if you are comfortable leaving the neighbourhood for most meals, sightseeing and evening wandering. The train ride is only one part of that routine: allow for reaching the platform and the walk at the other end. Skip it for a short romantic break or if returning home on foot after dinner matters.
- Best for: travelers on a budget, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want atmospheric evenings outside; You dislike taking transport for most outings
- Getting around: Direct trains link Schiphol and Centraal; metro 50/51 and tram 19 add cross-city options; little headline sightseeing is immediately walkable.
- After dark: Residents report a darker, less lively station environment in the evening; expect a functional return journey rather than a neighbourhood stroll.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $192 a night

Where to look in Sloterdijk
- Orlyplein. Start at the station's main square for straightforward rail access, with gardens and cafés softening the transport setting. Hotels here: Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam - Sloterdijk Station by IHG.
- Naritaweg near Sloterdijk station. Choose the station end for practical longer stays; this is a changing residential-and-office district rather than historic Amsterdam. Hotels here: Citadines Sloterdijk Station Amsterdam, Amsterdam ID Aparthotel, Mercure Hotel Amsterdam Sloterdijk Station.
- La Guardiaweg. Look on this side for a modern business-and-entertainment complex, keeping transport convenience ahead of neighbourhood atmosphere. Hotels here: Park Inn By Radisson Amsterdam City West.
How to choose
- Choose Citadines Sloterdijk Station Amsterdam if you want a proper kitchen for a week or longer and accept weekly housekeeping.

- Choose Park Inn By Radisson Amsterdam City West if you want comfortable conventional rooms cheaper than most here and do not need self-catering.
What paying more buys
Cheaper ibis Amsterdam City West covers the basics but is not beside Sloterdijk's platforms. Amsterdam ID Aparthotel and Citadines cost more for kitchens, living space and longer-stay practicality, not canal atmosphere or daily cleaning. For short stays spent out all day, Park Inn's conventional rooms can make better sense than paying for an apartment. Typical rates with Axel here run from $154 a night at ibis Amsterdam City West to $231 at Citadines Sloterdijk Station Amsterdam (last 30 days).
